Who’s New: Lisa Wuscher

By: Pat Winter I first heard the story of the three teacher friends from a faculty book club who all planned to retire to Albemarle Plantation about three years ago when I interviewed newcomers Bob and Mary Ann Eichenlaub. Since then I had the opportunity to meet and interview the second of the three to relocate here, Deb Phillips.  And in July, Lisa Wuscher joined the others as the third member of that now infamous book club to call the Plantation home. How did this happen? Nineteen years ago, Lisa, Deb and Mary Ann all taught at the Fleetwood Middle School near Allentown, Pennsylvania, and participated in a book club which happened to be organized by then reading specialist Mary Ann. One day in her home mail, Mary Ann found a postcard inviting her to come for weekend inquiry package visit. Mary Ann convinced Bob this was something he really wanted to do, although he maintains that if he had been the first to get that day’s mail, the card would have most likely been disregarded. After the Eichenlaubs’ initial visit, Mary Ann decided to visit on site during summer break with three of her teaching colleagues, and they returned here each summer for several years, renting a condo for a girls’ getaway. During those summers, they tried out everything our community had to offer to see if this could be their retirement place. Now, with Lisa’s arrival here this summer, Lisa, Deb and Mary Ann all live in an easy bike ride of each other and see each other regularly to play cards and participate in nothing less than several book clubs! Back at Fleetwood Middle School, Lisa taught eighth grade English and Language Arts where she was the faculty advisor and editor of the school newspaper. She also coached the “Girls On The Run” program, a national program for 8- to 13-year-old girls that promotes girl empowerment by teaching life skills through lessons and running. For twenty years she also worked part time for a social agency as a behavior specialist, helping children with special needs assimilate into their community. But last spring when her retirement numbers started to look favorable, she started looking at homes on the Plantation online. When she came here to visit during spring break, she surprised herself by buying a house on New River Road in the first 24 hours she was here. Lisa sold her big house in Pennsylvania to her son, a master mechanic with Firestone, who will now care for the family homestead. She also has a son who just moved to Florida and is an organic gardener and beekeeper. Her daughter, living in Oregon, is a senior product developer, making educational toys for National Geographic. Lisa quickly got very involved. She is already active in the Sports Club, Barre classes at the Community Center, the Women’s Club, the Osprey Yacht Club and two book clubs. An avid runner, Lisa can be seen jogging around Pasquotank Boulevard with her dog in tow. And she has started substitute teaching for the Perquimans County Schools, already being called to work in every school in the district. When you get a chance to meet Lisa, be sure to ask her about that brand-new set of golf clubs she just purchased. And be sure to welcome her “home.“
