The Best Things To Do in October around the Inner Banks

“Everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn”  -Elizabeth Lawrence

There is so much more to do in our area this fall that you won’t be forced to just sit around and watch the leaves turn…unless that’s your idea of fun; in which case, Albemarle Plantation has some of the best foliage around!  But if it’s fun fall activities for the whole family you’re looking for, we’ve got you covered there too!

Ghosts, goblins and witches; oh my!  Apparently, Edenton’s Historic District is full of tons of them!  Come and have a listen to the tales of the ancestors of Edenton on a “haunting” walking tour through Edenton’s Historic District at the Historic Edenton Ghost Walk.  If you’re not too spooked after that, you can enjoy a Ghost Harbor Craft Brew and s’mores cooked over an open fire…the perfect ambiance to tell some scary stories of your own!

Feeling nutty and want to take a short road trip?  We recommend the Suffolk Peanut Fest!  The festival features amusement rides, motorcycle rally, concerts, a demolition derby, fireworks, a shrimp feast and so much more!  There is so much to do that the festivities span over four days!  In a nut shell, it is a fun, family friendly way to celebrate our favorite legume!  You’re sure to be salty if you miss this event!

If you didn’t get enough strolling and spooky story telling at the Edenton Ghost Walk, you’ll want to get your steps in at the Elizabeth City Historic Ghost Walk too!  Filled more with history than fright, the city’s friendly apparitions invite you to tour seven historic homes in downtown Elizabeth City providing you with insight into the life and experiences of our local ancestors. This year’s ghostly theme is Project Zebra: Elizabeth City’s top-secret role in WWII.

Also included in the price of your ticket is a live stage show performed in Arts of the Albemarle’s Maguire Theater.

Since you will already be limping from all those ghost walks, you’ll be primed and ready to hobble down the street for the Elizabeth City Zombie Walk as well!  Come dressed and made up as a zombie or take advantage of the makeup artist at the event.  Don’t forget your dancing shoes either because the grand finale includes the Dance of the Zombies at Mariners’ Wharf Park!  Be there or be afraid!

If you are wanting to enjoy the gorgeous fall weather that October has brought with its arrival but without the Halloween emphasis, you have to check out The Dismal Swamp Express.  It’s a light-hearted and fun 45 minute open air tour narrated by park rangers and free of charge!  What better way to spend a beautiful Autumn day?
