by Tom Tetlow, President, Sound Sports Club
The Sound Sports Club concluded activities for the year with its annual ROCKFEST and picnic. The fishing was not great, but many fish were caught, just not enough keepers. Five boats participated this year, and since there were so few boats and many more people who wanted to fish, there was a dock fishing contest as well. As usual, many prizes were awarded. Mike West’s boat, “Wild West,” with Charlie Phelps and Harry McCoy first and second mates, took first place for the most pounds of stripers caught with the only two keepers caught. Charlie Phelps caught both fish, which earned him the award for the largest striper. Catching the largest fish off the docks was Reg Criffield, a nice yellow perch. Bruce Behrend won an award for the smallest striper, about eight inches. Of course, it was released. There will be extra award money for next year’s ROCKFEST!
Check your calendars for next year’s SSC events. Some are already scheduled, the first of which is the Wildlife Dinner on January 9th at the Club.
Thank you all for the great year the SSC enjoyed in 2015!
The end-of-year quarterly meeting was held in November. The speaker was Jonathon Crooks who talked to us about Windows 10 and protecting and maintaining our computers. Jonathon has started his own computer repair and maintenance business in addition to his duties in the restaurant. He has helped several people in the Plantation, and the feedback has been excellent.
This year the Board determined that it was time for a new SSC logo. So, we decided to have a contest and ask for submissions from the members. Six logos were entered, and all of the submissions were well thought out and designed, which made the decision a difficult one. The winner was Kim Mascolo. Kim was awarded a gift certificate for Dockside wine and a gift certificate to the Club. Congratulations, Kim, and thank you! We will publish the new logo shortly.
The last order of business at the meeting was the approval of the new Board of Officers and Directors. I would like to thank these people for volunteering for Board positions. The SSC is one of the most active and supported clubs in the Plantation thanks to the Board and all the members. This year we have 150 member families, an all-time high. Thank you for that!
Congratulations to the new Board!

Finally, I would like to thank my Board for all of their hard work through the last two years. The many activities that the SSC coordinates would not happen and certainly would not be as nice if it were not for the Board members taking a personal interest in making sure the events are well coordinated and fun. They went out of their way to purchase food and drinks for the many picnics, travel to Norfolk to purchase items to make centerpieces, visit vendors to solicit raffle prizes, donate baskets for the annual dinner raffle, not to mention setting up and running the activities. It is a true team effort to pull off so many great events. I cannot thank Jim Byron, Peggy West, Frank Mizak, Joyce McMellon, Ron Yerkes, Cheryl Jennings, Tom Ponte, Lynne Raymond, and, of course, Reg Criffield.
