OYC NEWS: Kayaking on Indiantown Creek

By: Bambi Vaughan

On June 5th, 21 intrepid kayakers ventured on an incredible and “treacherous” voyage on Indiantown Creek in Camden County. Led by our leader-in-training Mike Gardner, we gathered at the Community Center and caravanned with Mike’s truck in the lead, trailering six kayaks and an additional two on top of his SUV. Quite a sight! Patrick Morrissey’s commercial-sized van transported additional kayaks with various other trucks and cars completing the caravan.

The meandering creek was peaceful and lush with the fresh, spring green still evident, providing a canopy for us as we paddled. Unfortunately, the water was also bright green. The duckweed was plentiful and made for challenging paddling, but quite beautiful when ahead of you. We enjoyed melodious bird songs and exquisite flowers, had occasional
sightings of osprey and blue herons, and, of course, saw many cypress knees and moss-draped trees, and lots of colorful dragonflies. Hopefully, no one came home with mosquito bites, thanks to the dragon flies…

After our two-hour paddle trip, we headed to Paradiso Roma Restaurant in Elizabeth City to share stories and enjoy a delicious lunch. Only then did it start to drizzle.
