On Wednesday, May 15, the Osprey Yacht Club held its annual Blessing of the Fleet on the Albemarle Plantation Marina docks. More than 100 members and guests, including past OYC Commodores and the present OYC Board, lined the docks to pay tribute to members of the boating community who have passed away since the last ceremony and to join in prayer for the blessing of the fleet. Commodore Mike McGauvran led the ceremony with introductions and a short history about the origin of the Blessing of the Fleet.

The guest chaplain, the Very Reverend Jairo A. Maldonado-Pacheco, Pastor of Saint Ann Catholic Church, Edenton, offered a prayer of remembrance for the deceased. Then the poem, “Gone from My Sight,” was read by past Commodore Kathy Prewitt. Next, family members and appointed representatives tossed floral tributes into the waters of the Albemarle Sound to honor the nine departed souls. Father Jairo then offered a meditation and led a responsive prayer reading with those assembled to bless the fleet. The ceremony concluded with a benediction and songs led by Dave Chiasson and Eric Weber, including “Amazing Grace” and “America the Beautiful.”

After the formal program, Father Jairo walked the Marina docks with boat owners who wanted their boats blessed for protection from wind, rain, and the dangers of the deep. Once the solemn event concluded, OYC members and guests walked to Marina Park for fellowship and food. This was the first social gathering, or “Docktails,” of the OYC boating season.
