In The Neighborhood: Holiday Shopping in Downtown Hertford
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go,” as the familiar carol goes, and downtown Hertford is no exception. Since shopping locally not only saves time, but helps to support our community, we took a recent walk down North Church Street. Here we were happy to discover gifts for many folks on our shopping list.
We started our shopping excursion with a great cup of coffee from Brew 2 Rescue near the corner of Church and Grubb Streets. If you are shopping down-town at lunch, this is also a good place to stop in for one of their specials that includes daily soup, sandwich, and salad.
Hertfordshire Antiques’ store front is next, as we walk down Church Street. Here, merchandise is offered by a variety of antique dealers, including vintage items, antiques, jewelry, and art. If someone on your Christmas list is a collector, this might be just the spot to find some-thing special to add to their collection.
Right next door is the newest store on the street, The Hub, which is scheduled to open at the end of November. The Hub, owned by Plantation residents Patrick and Pamela Morrissey, will be a great place to help with shipping our gifts and even packaging them for us. Once fully operational, they plan to offer faxing, notary service, small batch printing, and much more.
A few steps away is Barley & Vine . Another newcomer to the shops on Church Street, Barley & Vine has a nice variety of craft beers and wines for that special someone or for your own holiday party. This is also a good spot to pick up some cock-tail napkins and check out the cute drink-related gift items.
White’s Dress Shoppe is a Hertford downtown landmark. Its assortment of ladies’ stylish clothes and accessories makes this a great spot not just to find a gift for someone on your list, but to look for an outfit for yourself for that special occasion coming up this season.
If it’s now near lunchtime, you might try ‘Bout Thyme Kitchen and Bakery at 109 North Church Street. It has a nice lunch menu, comfortable seating, and is open until 4 p.m.
Right next door is the Perquimans Art League Gallery and Gift Shop. Here, members of PAL, sometimes the artisans them-selves, will wait on you and proudly show you the unique hand-crafted items the shop offers, all made by local artists. This is a great chance to get some-thing for that person on your list who has “everything.”
At the corner of Church and Market Streets proudly sits Woodards Pharmacy, unmistakable with its blue and white striped awnings. In-side you can pick up what you might need to survive all the holiday partying. But if young children are on your list, don’t forget to check out its assortment of John Deere and Tonka toy trucks and sets of Doug and Melissa wooden toys.
As we leave downtown Hertford and drive down Harvey Point Road toward home, there is one more stop on our list, Planter’s Ridge Florist and Garden Center. Here you can purchase a live Christmas tree and poinsettias to help decorate the house. And don’t forget to pick up some bird-feeding supplies for the winter months. Planter’s Ridge will also take care of ordering and delivering a special Christmas floral arrangement for you or someone on your gift list.
So, if you venture to North Church Street for some holiday shopping, you might be able to spread some holiday cheer while supporting our local vendors. Maybe you will find just those presents you need, but you will also have a chance to meet the retail owners who bring unique small-town shopping right to our neighborhood. And the holiday spirit of giving will surely bring “the carol that you sing, right within your heart!”
