IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Albemarle Master Gardeners’ Spring Garden Show

BY: Pat Winter

The Ninth Annual Albemarle Master Gardeners’ Spring Garden Show, “A World of Gardening,” will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the Perquimans County Recreational Center, 310 Granby Street, Hertford, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This annual fundraising event is held to support The Katherine G. Shook Master Gardener Scholarship. The sale will feature plants, gardening items, and locally made crafts from a variety of vendors, plus a children’s corner, “Ask a Master Gardener Booth,” homemade baked goods, educational speakers, a 50/50 raffle, and more. Lunch, provided by Brew2Rescue, will be available for purchase. Admission is free.

This is the Master Gardeners’ only fundraiser for their scholarship awarded each year to students from Gates, Perquimans, or Chowan counties who are pursuing a career in horticulture, agriculture, natural re-sources, or a related field. The scholarship is named for Katy Shook who has been the NC Cooperative Extension Consumer Horticulture agent for Chowan, Gates, and Perquimans counties since 2003 and who established the area Extension Master Gardener program in 2005.

The Plantation has ten residents on the roster of this Master Gardener Group, many of whom are in positions of leadership for this chapter. In addition to the Spring Garden Show, the Albemarle Master Gardeners are involved in many community projects, including a program devised by its members entitled “Grow to Eat.” This program provides food bank recipients in Chowan, Perquimans, and Gates counties with vegetable plants potted in grow bags to provide food pantry clientele with easy, safe, and productive methods of growing produce at home. This program was recently awarded first place in a statewide Master Gardener Search for Excellence recognition program.
