Elizabeth City alone is home to 3 institutions of higher education Elizabeth City State University is a part of the University of North Carolina System and is proudly designated as one of North Carolina’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. While the focus is always on quality education, there are plenty of opportunities for fun and fellowship as well. Students and visitors can enjoy public events like music concerts and sporting events as well. Go Vikings! ECSU also has the Khan Planetarium, one of only 12 planetariums in the world!
Not far down the road, Mid-Atlantic Christian University is located in beautiful downtown Elizabeth City. The university is focused on strengthening the next generation of leaders who are confident in their faith and future. For those of you wanting to expand both your mind and your faith without actually enrolling in the university, visitors can attend a leadership or continuing education event, community training, or just stop by to enjoy a walk on the waterfront campus! Anyone can be a Mustang when they step on the MACU campus!
If a smaller community college is more your speed than the College of Albemarle is the best option. COA is proud to be North Carolina’s first community college and even has four additional campuses now. If nothing else, the College of Albemarle’s campus is worth a visit to walk the Fenwick-Holowell Trail. Take a stroll down the boardwalk and admire the beauty of our area or check out the new state of the art Performing Arts Center!
Down the road in historic Murfreesboro, Chowan University is another Christian Education Center. Chowan was named after the Native American Algonquin Chowanook tribe and is translated to mean “people of the south”. And that is exactly what you are greeted with anytime you are on campus; warm southern hospitality and a fondness for Jesus! The student population is around 1,400 and the location can’t be beat!
Arrrrr Matey! We couldn’t leave out the Pirates! East Carolina University is the largest of the Universities and attracts students from all over the world! They offer a range of academic programs all the way up to the doctoral levels. There are many options and opportunities in nearly every field to choose from. But, it’s not all work and no play at ECU. There are also numerous options for sports and recreation; including everything from NCAA Division 1 competition to badminton and yoga!
