GOLF NEWS: The Biggs Classic, A “Can’t Miss” Event

In five short years, the BIGGS Classic at Albemarle Plantation has become a “can’t miss” professional golf tournament. The 6th annual event is set for the week of May 20th – 25th at the beautiful and challenging Sound Golf Links. The GPro Tour is once again the operational partner of the tournament, with plans to in-crease the field size from 120 professionals in 2018 to 144 in 2019.

Six years ago, former Sound Golf Links Head Professional, Kenny Saunders and BIGGS Classic Tournament Director ,Emeritus Tom Loughlin hatched a plan to bring a professional mini-tour golf tournament to Albemarle Plantation. Through their blood, sweat, and tears, the foundation was laid for what has become possibly the most favored event among young pros.
The loyalty and support of the local sponsorship base is impressive. Title sponsor BIGGS Cadillac-Buick-GMC has been involved since the beginning, as have two other major sponsors, Sound Bank and Swim-me & Son Building Contractors. Along with these three stars, a host of other sponsors from throughout the local area help to make this annual event a success.
The addition of the GPro Tour as tournament operator in 2018 raised the BIGGS Classic to a new level. In addition to providing high quality operations, GPro Tour Tournament Director Gary Haugh was instrumental in securing our event winner an exemption to the Web.com Tour’s Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh. Continuing in 2019, this is a huge carrot dangling in front of these aspiring future stars.

But last, and certainly not least, the highest honor goes to the residents of Albemarle Plantation. Every year over 150 residents volunteer for such varied duties as starters, spotters, and scorers on the course, but also with refreshments, parking, driving range duties, and hospitality functions. Best of all, residents welcome players into their homes and provide them a comfy bed, a tasty meal, a friendly smile, and, if needed, even a shoul-der to cry on. The AP membership is without question the biggest reason the BIGGS Classic has become so popular among the players.
