Golf News: Masonis and Lahr Cup Tournaments

These two events are traditionally the last tournaments of the year held by The Sound Links Men’s Golf Association (SLMGA). Both are named after former members of the SLMGA. Ed Masonis was a very popular president of the league in 2004, while Paul Lahr was one of its most ardent and faithful supporters.

Members compete for the Masonis Cup from the white and green tees, while the Lahr Cup is for gold and red tee players. Both two-day tournaments were held simultaneously this year on September 16th and 18th and both used modified Stableford scoring to determine Gross and Net winners.

Masonis Cup

The Gross competition was a one-man show. Lou Andretta shot 80/82 for a total of 54 Stableford points and a 9-point advantage over Jim Garrison’s 47 points. In third was Tom Loughlin with 45 points.

On the Net side, there was a three-way tie for first, as Sam McNaught, Tom Loughlin, and Jim Garrison all had 41 points. Sam was awarded first place on the scorecard (a tie-breaking method based on scores on certain holes).

Lahr Cup

The competition for Gross honors was fierce. Billy Rowell, fresh off his win at the Senior Club Championship, took a solid lead on the first day with 24 points, while Reg Criffield followed with 21 and, lurking in third place, Walt Smith with 20. But Walt had saved his best for the second day. A brilliant 81 gave him 45 points, well ahead of Billy and Reg who both totaled 40 points.

Walt Smith also took home Net honors with 49 points after a tie with Rich Rieger was resolved on the scorecard. Most notable in his round was Walt’s net double eagle on the difficult #7 hole (a birdie with two handicap strokes).
