Despite the challenges presented this year, we were blessed with a week of good weather in mid-August and were able to successfully stage the annual stroke play SGL club championships.
The Sound Golf Links course had been well prepared by Randy Tetterton and his crew, and Ed White, our head golf professional, put together the pairings for the men to start early on Monday morning, August 17. 32 men turned out and played two days of keenly fought golf with no “max” hole-score to fall back on.
With both Gross and Net competitions at stake, it came down to the final group on the course on Wednesday to decide the Men’s Club Champion for players playing from the white tees. And with an 83, following up a solid 85, Tom Cupps is now our 2020 Men’s Club Champion.
In the Senior Men’s Championship, the ever-green Walt Smith came out on top, beating off challenges from a number of worthy opponents.
In the Net division, Tom Tetlow and Rich Reboli picked up champion-ship honors for Club and Senior Club events respectively.
The ladies did battle on Tuesday and Thursday that same week, and our new Club Champion is Betsy Strader who is a new resident, having moved to AP with her husband Jim at the end of last year. She seemed a little surprised but delighted as she received congratulations from her fellow competitors and our pro, Ed White. And Betsy also won the Net Champion competition for good measure.
With our new Senior Ladies tees now rated and available for regular play, the inaugural Senior Ladies competition was played this year. After two rounds of good-spirited play, Charlene Finamore came out on top, with Joan Behrend winning the Net competition in this division.
A big “thank you” from Ed White to all who participated this year. He encourages all SGL members to consider participation in 2021.
