Boardwalks of the Inner Banks

“There are so many beautiful reasons to be happy. Boardwalks are one of them.”- Unknown

You are probably familiar with some of the attractions that lead people to the Outer Banks, but you may not be as aware of the hidden gems that make the Inner Banks our favorite part of North Carolina!   The Inner Banks are surrounded by sounds, rivers, waterways, and swamps. All of these areas sit on the water and are great places for boating, kayaking, fishing, and any other water activity.

Even with all of the fun and exciting water sports opportunities, nothing beats a relaxing stroll down a peaceful boardwalk with a scenic view!  And lucky for us, the Inner Banks has the best around.  Here are some of our favorites:

As if fantastic nature views weren’t enough, the Edenton National Fish Hatchery boasts a beautiful raised boardwalk where visitors can walk through the wetlands and see wildlife and all of the colorful flora and fauna the Inner Banks has to offer.  Grab your binoculars because the boardwalk is also a stop on the North Carolina Coastal Birding Trail!

Also in Edenton is Bennett’s Millpond.  It is best known by kayakers and canoers for its paddling opportunities, but the boardwalk and pavilion are one of the park’s best kept secrets!  There are many trails to follow and even a boat launch!  It is also a stop on the North Carolina Birding Trail.

Difficult to pronounce but easy to fall in love with, is The Scuppernong River Interpretive Boardwalk in Elizabeth City.  The 0.75 mile loop meanders through a cypress swamp, and along the Scuppernong River, leading into the downtown area.  There is an abundance of wildlife to observe and trails to hike as well!

Another beautiful boardwalk in Elizabeth City is located at Waterfront Park.  This beautiful park for outdoor recreation provides two boat ramps, picnic tables, park benches, a pavilion, and the aforementioned boardwalk with a pier along the Pasquotank River.  It features a pavilion that is perfect for events and even weddings!

Located just a few walking blocks from downtown Historic Hertford and on the beautiful Perquimans River is Missing Mill Park.  The park is within walking distance of downtown and  you can picnic, fish from a sheltered pier, stroll along a nature boardwalk, launch a canoe or relax at the water’s edge and watch the sunset.
