APWC COMMUNITY: Service Drives

By: Penny Byrd and Mary Cassidy

If you don’t already know, Albemarle Plantation is a VERY generous community in many, many ways, but especially when the AP Women’s Club asks for your help. This year was no exception when it came to our two annual drives: 1) Spring “Baby Drive” in support of the Albemarle Pregnancy Resource Center in Elizabeth City, and 2) Late Summer “School Supplies Drive” in support of the Perquimans County School System (teachers and students alike).

We won’t bore you with every single bit of minutia; however, we can tell you that we took care of an awful lot of baby butts (28 bags or boxes of diapers equals 1,141 butts, plus 20 packages of wipes for an additional 1,428 for, most likely, the same butts). Also, we’re pretty sure the husbands bought the 48 bottles and sippy cups, because there were more pink ones than blue. Naturally, we received baby wash/oil/shampoo/lotion, plus some diaper cream and powder, a hairbrush set, and some money (always good and saves gas!).

Our successful collection of school supplies culminated with complete packages for several students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, as well as at the high school level. We also provided care packages for each of the teachers, thus satisfying their wish lists. And this year we were asked for something never before requested: headphones and ear plugs (21 sets were donated with more on the way). Here are some of the high-number items donated: 44 boxes of tissues (lots of noses), 75 notebooks (bound and spiral), plus note paper, folders, glue sticks, crayons, markers, copy and craft paper… and the list goes on.

On August 8 the supplies were delivered to Tan-ya Turner, Superintendent, James Bunch, Assistant Superintendent, and Mary Kay Peele, Project Coordinator at the Perquimans County Schools office. Several staff helped unload two SUVs full of sup-plies, and Mary Kay indicated she is happy to see such a great response. Families, who often have to make a choice between school clothes or school supplies, have already been relieved of that decision. It is wonderful to be able to make a small difference in the lives of people in our community and the teachers who work so hard on a limited budget. It is a happy thought that our supplies drive supports the education of our future community leaders (students across all grades) and teachers alike in providing them their wish-list items— definitely smiles all around!

A BIG THANK YOU to the APWC Community Service Committee members: Lynette Blackman, Gail Brady, Teresa Cheeks, Karla Gentry, Joan Lofhjelm, Barbara Mueller, Bambi Vaughn, Sandi Sheehan, and Jacquie Zimmerman, and Chair, Mary Cassidy. All these ladies received baby and school supplies at their homes and also collected the donations from the three drop-off locations: AP Clubhouse, Dockside, and the Community Center.

Last, but not least, another BIG THANK YOU to the AP Community for your support of both Albemarle Plantation Women’s Club drives.
