Catfish and Hertford

When you think of Hertford, NC, it’s only natural to think of fish… but not always the wet, scaly kind that flourish in the Albemarle Sound. It’s also natural to think of National Baseball Hall of Famer Jim “Catfish” Hunter, who was born and raised right here! The right-handed hurler pitched for both the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees and was a member of five World Series Championship teams in the 1970s. He pitched a perfect game on May 8, 1968 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987.

Sadly, when he passed away in Sept. 1999, he was suffering from ALS - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In his memory, the 12th Annual Catfish Hunter Softball Tournament was held last weekend. In addition to having a great time, the Hertford community raised more money than ever for ALS research.

That’s just what this community is all about.
