Boating and Space Age Technology

Boating is a favorite pastime of many Albemarle Plantation residents. And thanks to a new NASA-developed wireless sensor, recreational boaters can feel a little safer when they go out on the water for a day of fun.

Scientists at NASA’s Langley Research Center in nearby Hampton, VA, developed a magnetic measuring system that gives a safer and more accurate reading of how much fuel is left in a boat’s gas tank. The sensor can also be modified to detect water that may have gotten into the tank.

Think of how nice it will be to know exactly how much fuel you have for your adventure even while your boat is rocking and rolling on the waves! Apparently, NASA approved a partially-exclusive license agreement for wireless sensor technologies between the agency and Caplan Taylor Enterprises LLC, doing business as Tidewater Sensors. Located in Newport News, Va., Tidewater Sensors markets and sells the units internationally. So now you can use the same technology on your boat that the astronauts use!

You may want to check in on one of these devices before you head out for your fall fishing trip.
